Space use in free-ranging canids: are gonadal hormones required for territory maintenance?

چکیده

Fertility control among carnivores has been used to reduce depredations on livestock and wild neonates, population control, modify behavior, inhibit genetic introgression, human–wildlife conflicts. Although there is considerable knowledge techniques sterilize carnivores, little information concerning how the absence of gonadal hormones influences space use, survival canids. We examined territorial fidelity, home-range size overlap, 179 surgically sterilized free-ranging canids (124 coyotes (Canis latrans Say, 1823), 55 coyote – red wolf rufus Audubon Bachman, 1851) hybrids) with present (tubal-ligated females (n = 70), vasectomized males 73)) versus absent (spayed 22), neutered 14)). The did not influence annual territory rates. Additionally, no differences were detected across sexes hormonal treatments in size, percent residency rates, Methods fertility that do keep organs intact may prove useful for management without concern changes mainly territoriality, survival.

Effects of sterilization on territory fidelity and maintenance, pair bonds, and survival rates of free-ranging coyotes

Predation on sheep by coyotes (Canis latrans) is a longstanding problem for sheep producers. Current research suggests that surgical sterilization of coyotes could prove to be an effective method of reducing their depredation rates on domestic sheep by modifying their predatory behavior. However, for sterilization to be a viable management tool, the territorial and affiliative behaviors of pack...

Rab11 is required for maintenance of cell shape via βPS integrin mediated cell adhesion in Drosophila

In eukaryotes, vesicle trafficking is regulated by the small monomeric GTPases of the Rab protein family. Rab11, (a subfamily of the Ypt/Rab gene family) an evolutionarily conserved, ubiquitously expressed subfamily of small monomeric Rab GTPases, has been implicated in regulating vesicular trafficking through the recycling of endosomal compartment. In an earlier communication, we have shown th...

Mutations in SRY and WT1 genes required for gonadal development are not responsible for XY partial gonadal dysgenesis.

The WT1 transcription factor regulates SRY expression during the initial steps of the sex determination process in humans, activating a gene cascade leading to testis differentiation. In addition to causing Wilms' tumor, mutations in WT1 are often responsible for urogenital defects in men, while SRY mutations are mainly related to 46,XY pure gonadal dysgenesis. In order to evaluate their role i...

Serologic evidence of Leishmania infection in free-ranging wild and domestic canids around a Brazilian National Park.

Transmission of disease between wildlife, domestic animals, and humans is of great concern to conservation issues and public health. Here we report on the prevalence of anti-Leishmania sp. antibodies in 21 wild canids (7 Chrysocyon brachyurus, 12 Cerdocyon thous, and 2 Lycalopex vetulus) and 74 free domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) sampled around the Serra do Cipó National Park. In dogs, the ap...

Basking behaviour and torpor use in free-ranging Planigale gilesi

We investigated the importance of energy-conserving strategies for free-ranging Planigale gilesi in arid Australia. We monitored torpor use and basking behaviour using internal temperature-sensitive transmitters. Torpor was used every day; the maximum torpor bout duration was 18.2 h and the minimum body temperature was 10.5 C. Basking behaviour was observed during rewarming from torpor as well ...
